With Voltron leading the war efforts, the Blades and the Rebels have respectively become the Coalition's left and right arms, each dealing in a slightly brand of intelligence. The Blades work from within and focus on espionage, the Rebels employ their efforts more on external monitoring and guerrilla warfare. Usually, they settle for video conferences, but every now and then, someone learns something sensitive enough that they opt to meet in person, where the information is less likely to leave the room. The current meeting is one of those--small groups from the three factions disseminating information, with Shiro weaving everything together like he's a step ahead of them all.
Or like he knows something they don't. Wouldn't surprise Matt any, if he's being truthful, but he's not bothered by the idea, either. Shiro isn't the type of person to withhold things without very good reason for it, so all he can really do here is trust that he knows what he's doing.
It's kind of weird, though. They haven't seen each other in... well, a while, but there are times lately when he wonders if he was always so... unreachable? There's a lot going on, and it's not like he can expect a person to be exactly the same after everything they've been through, but it feels a little off that someone he's spent months exploring the galaxy with would give him a warm welcome and suddenly no longer give him the time of day. He'd almost shrug it off, if not for another familiar presence.
... Yeah. He definitely hasn't Keith look that guarded in a long time. It's not like they were particularly close, or anything, but it was pretty obvious, even from the outside. Those two used to be attached at the hip, didn't they?
Maybe he's being nosy. Maybe he was just in that asteroid for so long he's inventing overtly complex excuses to talk to people. But hey, the worst that could happen is that he gets told to shove off, and he honestly doesn't mind much. Which is why, when everyone starts clearing the room, he finds himself zeroing in on someone a little unexpected. ]
[ Guarded doesn't really cover the uneasiness that has settled into Keith's bosom since he left Voltron. It's a slew of emotions, most of which pile inwards on himself. Shiro had every right to be angry with him, he believed, especially after how much bullshit he pulled since Shiro finally came back. At least, for what it's worth he believed also that here with the Blades is his best place in the end. He felt at home in a different way than he had in a long time. Though the Galra were a stoic people, the environment suited him better.
Working alongside Voltron and the Rebel Alliance isn't anything new, just a different perspective of the same thing he's always done. He's surprised the first time he sees Matt again, but relieved to know that his friend Pidge had found her brother once again, leaving him to wonder what is happening with his friends while he's here instead. It almost makes him wish he were back with them....
Perhaps not. He'd only make things more difficult for Shiro.
Keith is about to leave when Matt interrupts him, stopping and pivoting to see the other. It's been a long time since they'd last talked, but it isn't as if he bore illwill toward Matt like he did so many others from his past. He's just... surprised Matt would bother. They only knew each other through Shiro. ]
[ Which leaves him to rub the back of his head a little. It's actually true, but he does realize that must sound a little weird, as seldom as they've spoken. So, just to get a little more to the point.... ]
Seemed like things got a little tense in there.
[ Which might be pretty a pretty generous way of putting it, from where he's standing. ]
[ Keith can't help but smirk, a facial expression he no doubt got from his father, but for all the two of them know at this point, who could say what his mother is like? ]
Things are usually pretty tense here, [ Keith relaxing now is probably the first time this hideout has seen any ease in a while, and it shows in his stature that he has. ]
You could probably figure this out on your own, but before allying with the coalition, the Galra were pretty ubiquitously hated through out the universe. The blades haven't had allies in centuries, and since stealth is our specialty, we haven't needed them either. They took a huge risk working with us; I'd imagine they're still pretty uneasy about the increase of strange faces. But... I wouldn't take it too personally.
Well... Can't argue with that. I think the secrecy makes some people a little uneasy, because for the most part we've been taking the exact opposite appraoch, and there's been really heavy casualties. [ That is an extreme understatement, to put it lightly. ] It'll get better, though. It has to. With all these new alliances springing up, there's also more hope out there than there ever was before, and nobody can complain about that.
[ It's working well. They can't exactly take back the whole universe in one fell swoop, but they can work more systematically, and that's enough. ... Although not quite the point he wanted to make with his initial comment. ]
... Have you managged to talk to Shiro much outside these meetings?
[ It makes sense, and Keith nods as Matt reasons through their differences, eyes drifting thoughtfully. The confidence is good to hear; it reminds him of Shiro's. That kind of warmth and confidence isn't something he's heard since joining the Blades. It's almost as if Matt is reading his mind, and Keith glances up at him as he hears the name.
His eyes fall down shortly afterward. ]
... No, [ he admits with reluctance, folding his arms over his chest. ] Our outside contact is mostly limited. [ There's a pause before he explains a little deeper, touching on things he normally had no one to admit to. ] And... even if it weren't, I don't really think we should be talking. I don't really need something like that tempting me to go home.
[ There's a slight ruffle in his brow after the words form. He's not really sure why he chose to phrase it like that when he had nine million perfectly good reasons not to go back–but talking about Shiro is so easy. Talking about his own desire to find place and meaning? Talking about the struggle that he felt with his dear friend? There's a few more layers to this onion before Matt gets to that. –Also inadvertently calling the Castle of Lions "home." ] My place is here right now.
